English Classes
Every Saturday, a group of volunteers from Help Colombia visit Medellin’s Barrio Moravia to give English classes to a group of about 30 kids (ages 8-12).
Not too long ago, Barrio Moravia used to be a massive garbage dump. Over the years, people started building their little shacks/homes where they could both live and work. Today Moravia is a neighbourhood built on top of the garbage and it is mainly inhabited by displaced individuals and families who were affected by internal conflict, armed violence, unemployment, and poverty over the last 5 decades in Colombia.
The children who attend the Saturday classes will certainly benefit in the future from their new language skills, however, the ultimate goal of this project is much bigger than language proficiency.
These classes give us a way to gain a deeper understanding of the history, needs, challenges, aspirations, social construct, and culture of the entire neighbourhood and it’s people. They also allow us to teach the children important life skills, conflict resolution, group dynamics, self appreciation, and much more.
If you’d like to help us to expand this program and make it available to more kids and neighbourhoods like Moravia, please leave a comment, get in contact with us, or make a donation today!
